16. TOUR OF MORNINGSIDE COTTAGE
90 mins.
MISS MARPLES HOUSE - Morningside Cottage is a tribute to
the artistry and craftsmanship of cottage builder Pam Throop,
and the video "Morningside Cottage" is a testament to
the hospitality of cottage owner Sarah Salisbury who now, with
the help of Jason Getzan, invites us all to see this miniature
replica of Miss Jane Marples home which she described with
such joy and enthusiasm during its construction and furnishing
to the readers of her Nutshell News "Private Eye" columns
in 1988, 1989, and 1990.
First-time viewers, especially those who did not have the benefit
of those articles, may enjoy fast forwarding to the interview
with artisan Throop before they "take the house tour."
Her explanation of her motivation and techniques is both enlightening
and inspiring and makes the entire trip through the cottage more
meaningful.
"Morningside Cottage" is a video that miniaturists,
clubs, and especially fans of Miss Marple may want to own. Getzans
photography is excellent. Scale is subtly introduced by the human
hand that gently opens the doors and windows to afford us a closer
view of the remarkable interiors. Many furnishings are removed
and spotlighted for our further inspection and enjoyment but,
sadly, are not acknowledged. Viewers who want more information
may want to have the cited issues of Nutshell News at hand before
they watch the video.

20. BASIC LATHE TECHNIQUES
In this video, Richard Simms demonstrates techniques and skills
for doing miniature turnings by hand. "By hand" in this
context means that he uses turning chisels to shape each piece
rather than a duplicator attachment. Although he does not discuss
the selection of the lathe itself, Mr. Simms gives detailed descriptions
of all phases of using one. For example, he recommends a basic
set of chisels, then describes and demonstrates the sharpening
procedure, the proper way to hold the tools and the way each one
is used. He discusses measuring techniques and pattern making,
and takes the viewer through the step-by-step process of turning
a spindle. The program concludes with demonstrations of turnings
employing various techniques, including free-ended and boring.
Helpful "tricks of the trade" are sprinkled throughout
the program.
This video is very well done, with excellent close-up photography
and a clear, understandable presentation. It is quite detailed
and suited for those who have a serious interest in lathe work.
